The Innovate Africa Challenge
The focus of Innovate Africa Challenge on “Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Climate Action” is to support the creation of more initiatives at the intersection of climate action and AI, democratize AI and promote local AI innovation for sustainable development in Ghana, Rwanda and Kenya. Its objective is to foster innovative uses of AI to mitigate the impacts of climate change and/or to support climate adaptation efforts in the African continent, while strengthening the AI and start-up ecosystem.

The key expected outcomes are: 

1. Increase awareness for the potential of emerging technologies such as AI to tackle climate change-related challenges. 2. Increase the number of actors working at the intersection of AI and Climate Action. 3. Enable increase in the number of AI for climate action solutions and development of concrete pilot projects in the interest of bringing awareness to Artificial Intelligence Technologies and its transformative potential in Smart Africa Member States.

Eligibility Criteria


To be eligible to apply for the challenge, applicants must meet following basic requirements:

1. The business must be a legally incorporated/ registered for-profit entity in any one of the 39 member countries of Smart Africa Alliance and have been in operation for at least 6 months.

2. The applicant must be willing to operate the solution in at least one of the countries of focus (Kenya, Rwanda, or Ghana).

3. The applicant’s solution must be in climate change related thematic areas and must be AI-enabled.
